A trip to Italy - Part 2 - Side trips and a big finish
In Gubbio, in Umbria, north of Rome, this wise old cat will stare into your soul
In the second part of our 2003 trip to Italy, we left Rome to visit some other towns. Then we finish back in Rome, where there's always more to see.
A cloudy sun rests behind this beautiful ornament.
A scene in an old church in Gubbio
Sunset at the Palazzo dei Consoli in Gubbio
Sunset in the palazzo, made perfect with a glass of wine
At night, along a curving street in Gubbio.
The tower in the palazzo as seen through a handmade glass window in an old church door.
Morning behind the shutters in the little hotel where we stayed in Gubbio
Along the road, I saw this discarded package of cigarettes. It says, "Smoking kills."
Two boys racing down the street in Spoleto
A roman viaduct across a steep ravine in Spoleto.
Most pictures show it from the side, but I thought the overhead view was more interesting.
An Etruscan face in Viterbo.
An Etruscan mosaic floor in Viterbo.
A detail at the baths of Caracalla
The artist and his muse at a gate along the Via Appia Antica
A fantasy scene of light and trees along the Via Appia Antica

Tony's angels #2. A guardian angel at the Castel Sant’Angelo
Tony's angels #3. An avenging angel at the very top of the Castel Sant’Angelo
A view looking out from inside the Castel Sant’Angelo
A view over Rome, as it looked in the 18th century.
A deep and dangerous staircase inside the Castel Sant’Angelo
Italy's flag, lit from behind
Looking down from the upper level of Saint Peter's Basilica
A view of Rome from the top of Saint Peter's Basilica
Michelangelo! I can see your house from here!
A beautiful figure at the Vatican
And thus concludes our visit to Italy.
I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
